What is Attitude?
Attitude is how one behaves towards somebody or
something. The way we look at people, situations etc. It is one's personal
view, opinion or judgment. It also describes one's general emotional approach
towards a person or situation.
Attitude
Formation
There are a number of factors that influence how
and why attitudes form.
1.
Experience: Attitudes form
directly as a result of experience. They may form due to direct personal
experience, or they may result from observation.
2. Social Factors: Social roles and
social norms can have a strong influence on attitudes social roles relate to
how people are expected to behave in a particular role or context Social norms
involve society's rules for what behaviors are considered appropriate.
3. Leaning Attitudes can be learned in a variety
of ways. We know how advertisers influence your attitude toward a particular
product. In a television advertisement we see young beautiful people having fun
on a beach while enjoying a sports drink. This attractive and appealing imagery
causes you to develop a positive association with this particular beverage
4. Conditioning Sometimes association of two
different events can condition a person and influence attitudes to develop.
Imagine a young man
who has just started smoking. Whenever he lights up a cigarette people
complain, chastise him, and ask him to leave their vicinity. This negative
feedback from those around him eventually causes him to develop an unfavorable
opinion of smoking and he decides to give up the habit.
5. Observation: Finally people also learn attitudes by observing
people around them.
Importance of
Attitude
Attitude plays an important role in a person's
life. Attitude, whether positive or negative plays a role in a person's daily
life.
Many people say attitude is more important than experience or
education.
A person's attitude determines the state of world she/he
lives in.
It drives virtually every decision one makes and how one
lives each day of life.
Attitude will shape a person's career.
A positive attitude will propel a person forward, while a
negative attitude will get them fired.
Attitude is a way of thinking. People are often
identified as having positive or negative, right or wrong, good or bad,
optimistic or pessimistic mind set.
Attitudes generally express positively or negatively.
For example, when a person is having good feelings towards
their work or co-worker, their attitude is positive.
When a person feels unwilling to do certain things that are
necessary or show hostility towards certain individuals, then their attitude is
negative
It has been found that people who have a good
attitude remain healthier than their counterparts.
This is because an
optimistic attitude helps in preventing sadness, depression, anger, stress and
anxiety and this in turn helps in preventing various medical problems.
How to develop positive attitude:
1. Make regular SWOT analysis by maintaining a
diary List your S Strengthes W Weaknesses. O.Opportunities and T/C Threats
Challenges. Work toward improving strengths and minimising weaknesses
2 Accept yourself as you are and not as you
think you should be
3. Ask a friend whom you trust to indicate your
strengths and weaknesses.
4 Learn to appreciate others and do not hesitate
to tell them how much you appreciate them.
5. Learn to accept compliments from others
gracefully.
6. When you feel your self-esteem is low,
impartially analyse your mistakes, think of your strengths and remember the
things you did well.
7 Observe your thoughts and emotions and learn
to express them in the right manner and in the right context.
8. Take up challenges and do not believe you
have failed before you have tried. Always remember-failure is a step towards
success; do not give up, keep trying.
